WATCH: These three simple planter tips will make your home stand out

These designer tricks will make your neighbours green with envy.

Now that you've got a solid soil base, it's time to get planting.

When choosing plants it's most important to determine where your planter will be located.

Whether it will sit in full sun, partial sun, or partial or full shade, make sure you select the appropriate plants.

Then it's time to pick your thrillers, fillers and spillers.

Start with something tall.

It's often placed in the middle of the planter but can be towards the back if your pot will be sitting in front of a wall.

Surround your thriller with fillers.

These are the bulkier flowering plants, or greens, that will fill out your pot.

Lastly, plant your spillers around the edge. These are trailing flowers and vines that organically 'spill'

from your planters.

When it comes to colour, Carrie from Magnolia Acre Co. says to stick to the colour wheel, but don't be afraid to mix it up and add your own personality.

One final 'designer' tip: mix your foliage to make your creation more interesting.

With greens ranging in colour from lime to emerald to silver, it's easy to make your planters stand out!
