Kelowna Comic Shop showcases high-end issues
There’s stark irony at Ted’s Paperback and Comics in Kelowna.
Why, you might ask? Perhaps it’s because the comic book with the richest price tag is that of Walt Disney’s ‘Uncle Scrooge’ issue number nine.
A stiff $330.
“The price on higher end issues is usually because of the rarity, condition, popularity,” owner Susan Raulin told Kelowna10. “Sometimes a movie comes out and it’ll drive up the price of some comic books.”
Some new TV series have brought lesser-known superheroes into the limelight and made their comics much more popular, such as Marvel’s Moon Knight.
One of the most important things that dictates a comic is condition, which is typically dictated by a professional grader who will assign the issue a numbered grade to determine its overall worth.
She said the value difference between something considered ‘near-mint’ and something considered ‘fine’ could be stark, going from $100 all the way down to just $25 depending on the rating.
Alongside the $330 print, Raulin showcased the usual superhero fare - a Daredevil comic, and a limited series Wolverine issue.
Of the more expensive comics, like the Walt Disney piece, Raulin said they “appeal to a smaller market, it’s usually older collectors buying them out of nostalgia.”
However, she says she does not get many higher end comics in her store, as most collectors will never part with their copies.
“The community for collector comic books is dedicated.”
