Woman rescued from Dilworth Mountain

Police pull off steep angle rescue

A scary, unusual, but successful call out for Kelowna RCMP.

On Tuesday afternoon they headed to the very steep Dilworth mountainside to rescue a young woman.

Police said the 18-year-old had climbed a guard rail at the top and slid down the side, near Chilcotin Crescent and Bowron Street.

Anyone familiar with that mountainside will know it’s covered in loose shale with slide channels that weave down among the craggy rocks.

RCMP reported multiple officers, the Kelowna Fire Department, and EHS attended the scene and located the female approximately three quarters of the way down the very steep terrain.

Officers responded by placing her in a harness and safely lowering her without further injury.

“We are proud of the quick-thinking officers who went above and beyond by climbing down the embankment, putting themselves at risk in order to rescue this young female from further harm,” Cst. Mike Della-Paolera said in a media release.

Police described the woman as being very fortunate in suffering only scratches to her back as a result of her sliding down the side of a mountain.

She was transported to KGH by EHS for minor medical treatment.
