New research shows it's all about the curvature
Scientists have identified particular types of stones that can produce “almighty” leaps out of the water when skimmed across the surface.
While the classically favoured shape has always been stones that are thin and flat, researchers have found that heavier, potato shaped ones can achieve equally impressive results.
“Try some wacky stones and see what happens,” said Dr. Ryan Palmer, an applied mathematician at the University of Bristol. “Try and throw a stone that looks like a potato. You can get some fun things happening with heavier stones.”
The researchers came to this discovery with the help of a mathematical relationship between the mass of the skipping stone, and the curvature of its underside which would determine whether or not it will skim.
Heavier stones with sufficient curvature would reach great heights if thrown properly.
Armed with this knowledge, Big Ginger from 103.1 Beach Radio ventured to Sarsons Beach to test this new discovery.
