WATCH: Zeva the blind dog finds her forever home

Catching up with this special boxer mix.

  • The boxer-mix now lives with two siblings: Max, a German Sheppard, and Josie, a Black Mastiff

When Kelowna10 first met Zeva in September 2021, the three-year-old boxer mix still had fresh stitches from a recent operation.

Due to glaucoma, she lost both her eyes, and was living with a foster family.

Several questions arose in the months since: Where is she? How is she doing? Did she find a forever home?

Paws it Forward, the organization that fostered and cared for Zeva, connected Kelowna10 with her new forever family.

Zeva now lives with Katie, who knew there was a connection when they first met.

“She was energetic and welcoming. Very playful, lots of energy,” Katie said. “It was love at first sight, for sure.”

Zeva also now has two siblings to play with: Max, a German Sheppard, and Josie, a Black Mastiff.

It makes for an energetic home, as on top of the dogs, Katie has teenaged kids and babysits her niece during the week.

With the help of her new canine companions, Zeva has grown accustomed to her new surroundings, sprinting up and down stairs and navigating the house with ease, despite her total lack of vision.

Katie was in the midst of helping other people with their pets during the summer wildfires when she learned of Zeva.

“The love she gives us all back and you can tell how happy she is that she has brothers and sisters … it’s been exceptionally rewarding.”

Katie knew adopting a blind canine would bring challenges. She was concerned about having enough time to properly care for Zeva and juggle the rest of the house.

But Katie’s approach was to just let Zeva be a dog and learn from the pack.

Their home didn’t require modifications but when the swimming pool cover comes off, they’ll put up a gate. Zeva somehow already knows to avoid the pool.

Zeva has adapted well to only having four senses. Katie said some people only realize Zeva has no eyes when she bumps into their legs.

But Katie admits Zeva has one downside: snoring.

“This is her one fault. I will have to say is her extreme ability to snore us out of our room,” she said. “I don’t know what to compare it to besides maybe a really loud blender.”
