WATCH: You can't grow nicely if your pot is not prepped

Sometimes, what you can't see counts the most

It’s time to get planting!

Beautiful planters are built on a foundation of what you can’t see, and it all starts with proper drainage.

Carrie Blanleil of Magnolia Acre Co. said the biggest mistake people make is forgetting about the importance of what’s under the soil.

Make sure your pots have drainage holes. Fill the bottom quarter with cans, plastic bottles or packing popcorn.

Lightweight fillers keep pots from getting too heavy and save money on soil.

Blanleil said the top 3/4 should be filled with nutrient rich potting soil that will allow your plants to grow strong roots to withstand Okanagan summer heat.

Don’t forget to fertilize!

Blanleil advises that you follow manufacturer instructions but plan to feed your plants every week.

Now you’re ready to get growing!

We’ll be back next week with some tips on how to make your planters stand out.
