WATCH: What you need to know for Canada Day celebrations

Slate of new and old favourites on tap for July 1

For Renata Mills, two Canada Days have come and gone, with little to no fanfare.

A far cry from her usual routine for 20 years.

But after two years of a July 1 marked with empty beaches and silent stages, the executive director of Festivals Kelowna was eager to don herself in red and white, pop up a tent and announce the return of Canada Day festivities in Kelowna.

“Thankfully, this morning meant yay, we get to announce it and actually present a wonderful Canada Day celebration,” she said.

The one-day party includes everything from live music on five stages, a dog show, kids zone, an array of food, mini regatta, and small business bazaar.

New this year is a professional chainsaw artist who will carve a work of art on Tugboat Beach. There will also be drop-in Drag Queen Storytime with Miss Frieda Whales. The BC Dragoons will also be set up in Stuart Park.

Much loved favourites are still on the roster, like the annual Folkfest, which features five hours of multicultural performances at Prospera Place.

The ever-popular Happy Birthday Canada cake cutting will go at 12:30 p.m., while fireworks will fly a little earlier this year, at 10 p.m.

Community, Mills said, is at the heart of the day.

“We call it Celebrate Canada Day – Kelowna for a reason, and it is about our citizens, and visitors to our community, who get to celebrate how proud and happy we are that we live in such a wonderful country,” she said.

Celebrate Canada Day – Kelowna is free to attend, however, donations are welcome and support the costs of putting on the celebration.
