Community-wide garage sale about meeting people, giving items a second life

It’s been two years since the last Kettle Valley Garage Sale, which has given people plenty of time to accumulate items that need to find a new home.

Food trucks, music, and local vendors were also part of the event, making for an enjoyable experience for curious shoppers to wander the streets and back alleys, trying to find something that caught their eye.

President of The Kettle Valley Neighbourhood Association, Dave Cartwright, told Kelowna10, the sale gives people a chance from outside the neighbourhood to come visit.

“And it gives people a chance inside the neighbourhood to get rid of a lot of stuff that they’ve been saving up for the last two years,” Cartwright said.

He added typically there are about 200 houses that participate.

“This year we also have an artist and artisan market. It’s an event that seems like a lot of people enjoy,” Cartwright said.

For him, the event is about community.

“Kelowna is a friendly town. We have a lot of new people here. It’s just a good chance to meet your neighbours, whether they live in Kettle Valley or not, everyone is welcome,” Cartwright said.

The community wide sale was put on hold for the past two years due to the pandemic, creating a lot of anticipation for this year's event.

“Almost three years later, I think we’re going to get record crowds. I’m anticipating about two to three thousand people,” he added.

Cartwright's favorite part about garage sales is giving items a second life.

“It just gives us a chance to pass those items on, whether they’re toys or home décor,” he said.

Owner of Love Co. Ceramics, Briana Paulson, said it’s her first time at the Artist & Artisan Market.

“It’s super busy. The garage sales seem really exciting, we have lots of people coming down,” Paulson said.

The thing she loves most about the event is the community.

“When I was little my dad and I would always go to garage sales together, so it’s kind of a fun thing to do.”
