WATCH: This passport is key to discovering a different taste of the Okanagan

Stamp cards invite people to explore breweries across Kelowna and West Kelowna

  • Part of the BC Ale Trail
  • 19 participating locations in the city
  • Chance to win prizes after collecting six stamps

The Okanagan is known for its wine, but one passport is bringing beer to the tasting table.

For the next month, the Kelowna and West Kelowna Tasting Passport invites people to explore local breweries and enter for a chance to win prizes. It’s the first time the city has had a beer-specific tasting passport.

“It’s actually becoming quite a popular beer spot,” Ali Lewis, manager at Copper Brewing, told Kelowna10, of the Okanagan. “More breweries are doing more food and other aspects, to bring extra people in and kind of overtake the wineries a little bit.”

At Copper Brewing, the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly as people ate gourmet hotdogs while drinking beer from one of its 20 taps. Some tables had video games guests could play as they visited with friends and family.

The passport is part of the BC Ale Trail, which is a way for people to explore breweries across the province. In Kelowna, there are 19 breweries, liquor stores, and pubs participating.

“It’s about actually amplifying the breweries that we have available here and giving them a little bit more of a voice in that whole system,” Lewis said. “A lot of the breweries around here have a lot of really good quality beers that they would love to see more people drinking, so it gives them even more reasons to do so.”

From April 15 to May 16, people can attend any of the participating locations to collect stamps. Once six unique stamps have been collected, the beer coinsures can hand in the passport at any location for a chance to win a brewery prize pack, or the grand prize of a two-day getaway to visit Kamloops and Salmon Arm.

“Having that option for prizes and option for interaction means that there’s a lot more reason to come,” Lewis explained.

“I’m excited to see other people come in and try stuff [and] I’m excited to see them spend more time in the breweries we have available.”
