Local makeup artist demonstrates her skills at KFX

Kelowna Fan Experience (KFX) officially kicked off Friday evening for a weekend full of fun.

One of the panels was about special effects (SFX) makeup in movies and TV. One local makeup artist who works in the film industry had a short demonstration about what she does.

“I love art, creativity, and makeup,” Sheleah Bradley told Kelowna10. “Film is forever. I am obsessed with films.”

Bradley has been doing SFX for over 10 years and knew she wanted to pursue it as a career ever since she was a kid. After graduating from Marvel College in Kelowna, she started volunteering on various films before landing a paid gig.

In 2013, she won a makeup award in New York City for her work in the short film, ‘Last Man Mopping.’ It was made by Kelowna locals as part of a 24-hour film challenge. She said that project really kick-started her career.

“Everybody says you have to be in Vancouver, but I actually live here and just travel,” she explained.

Bradley said a typical day on set involves arriving a bit before call time to get prepped. Then, she looks at the schedule for who will be getting makeup done and for which scene. Makeup can range from making actors look glitzy, to turning them into scary creatures.

“It’s a lot of continuity tracking, which is really cool,” she said. “If they have a cut in scene two, like a cut on their forehead, then it has to match scene six, and how many days past that or prior to that.”

During the panel, Bradley demonstrated how she takes off SFX makeup. She had a model with a mummy-zombie mask, who was sitting on the stage as she talked about the process.

Bradley has worked on around 30 films and is excited to keep pursuing her passion for film and makeup.

KFX runs through Sunday.
