WATCH: Standby for first real early summer heat in Kelowna

Above normal temperatures arriving for the weekend.

It has taken a long time to arrive, but the first run of hot weather is upon us.

From Saturday, daytime temperatures are expected to reach the low 30’s with overnight lows down to the mid-teens. The hot weather is expected to stick around until at least Monday.

While the good weather is being welcomed, it also presents some possible issues. Environment Canada said, the elevated temperatures are always a cause for concern as the risk of heat related illnesses increases.

In terms of the ongoing late spring freshet, the higher temperatures also have the potential to add to the rising watersheds.

According to Central Okanagan Emergency Operations, the increased volume of water flowing out of the mountains with rapid melting snowpacks could create further risks to the public. They are recommending caution when walking near creeks as banks can be slippery and unstable.

There is still the risk of rising water to cause further erosion and damage to waterfront property and structures and residents are asked to take precautions.

Members of the public are asked to leave debris washing up along the lakeshore in place until water levels recede to protect from further erosion.

Boat owners are reminded their wake in the water can cause further erosion and damage to waterfront property and structures.
