Will this Kelowna man's lawn be the omen the Oilers need?

Homeowner takes his hockey passion to next level

The Edmonton Oilers continue their quest Tuesday night to become the first Canadian team in almost 30 years to lift the Stanley Cup when they play Colorado in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final.

And there's a Kelowna man who has been tending his own special piece of lawn with the passion, desire and commitment of Connor McDavid in full flow.

Can his greenkeeping efforts push his favorite team all the way, or is he pushing that lawnmower in vain?

A Kelowna man has taken his dedication for his favourite hockey team to a whole new, organic level.

To celebrate the first NHL playoff Battle of Alberta in over three decades, Jeff Krause, has etched the name of his beloved Edmonton Oilers onto his front lawn.

For Krause, who hails from Edmonton, the majestic mowing has roots in a series well before this one against the Calgary Flames.

When his family moved into their Crawford Estates home in 2006, the Oilers went on an improbable Stanley Cup playoff run. He mowed the team logo into the grass before the team succumbed in heartbreak fashion to the Hurricanes.

He’s hoping, this time, his gardening prowess will be a good omen.

“It took me about 45 minutes to get it all done then it takes only 20 minutes to tidy it after that. But there are a few precise measurements you need to take to start it off,” Krause told Kelown10 at his home ahead of Game 2 in the series against Calgary.

He said his neighbours largely approve and some folks honk their horns as they drive by, but there are Canucks fans on the street who may not appreciate the horticultural efforts.

Back to that lawn though, and things need to be done carefully in terms of getting the logo and that unique dripping font just right..

“There’s only one take. Once you start mowing there’s no going back.”

Unlike his lawn, Krause and Oilers fans know they have more than just one take to get past this hurdle on their quest towards possible Stanley Cup glory.

It remains to be seen if any local Flames fans in the neighborhood decide to start sculpting their hedges.
