WATCH: Rental high-rise proposed for Bertram Street

Tower would join several nearby redevelopment projects

More density is being proposed for northern downtown Kelowna.

Plans will come before city lawmakers Monday, looking to approve rezoning for three lots to make way for a 17-storey apartment building.

Kelowna-based Mission Group has plans for a 137-suite tower just south of Cawston Ave., along Bertram Street. The building will have 14 floors of rental suites on top of a three-level parkade and two-storey ground floor townhomes. On level four, tenants will have community garden plots, kitchen and barbeque areas, and a children’s play space.

The latest plans are revised from earlier schematics that detailed a 16-floor tower with 133 units.

City planners are recommending support for the project as all the units will be rentals, which falls inline with the goal of bringing more accessible housing downtown.

“The proposed development would benefit from the central and convenient location of the project, in close access to downtown shops, services and amenities,” the report reads.

The tower will join a handful of other redevelopment projects in the area. Along Cawston Avenue, a proposed six-storey building that will include a school and rooftop playground is underway.

Troika Management has plans in place for a six-level affordable senior’s housing project at 1353 Richter Street. On the corner of Doyle Avenue and St. Paul Street, the future UBCO campus will join a 30-floor residential and 16-storey office tower. Right beside that, Kerkhoff Construction has proposed a 35-floor mixed-use tower.

Other smaller developments in the area are under construction, too.

Council will still need to sign off on a form and character development permit and development variance permit.
