Inspired by nature, drawn to human connections.

That’s how one local artist describes her latest single and music video, Human, that’s garnered international attention.

Jodi B is a producer and performer who has been musical since she was three years old.

“If you see the veins on a leaf and you look at the veins on your hands, they’re very similar,” Jodie B told Kelowna10. “I wanted to create a project that showcased that, and how we are nature, and looking out for nature is also looking out for each other.”

The director of the video, Nick Bohle, encouraged her to submit the music video to film festivals. It was good advice, as the project has since won various awards at film festivals across the world from New York to Hamburg.

“It’s surreal, as a musician, as an artist, I’ve never thought about submitting a music video to film festivals,” she said.

Although the project was made a year ago, Jodie B and the team let it run the festival circuit for a year before releasing it on their own.

“I think that was a really cool part of it as well, having the patience of letting things grow the way they should… just like nature.”

The video’s inspiration came from Jodie B’s own daily walks and seeing similarities between humans and nature, such as sweat on skin and sap on a tree. She wanted to share the message of connections between the two, while also expressing the need to take care of the planet.

“It’s so important that we pay attention to what’s going on around us and tune in a little bit more,” she explained. “We are this planet, so when we are destroying it, we’re really just destroying ourselves.”

The majority of the video was filmed at Scenic Canyon Regional Park around the Rock Ovens and Layer Cakes.

“The video is following us around in nature, being human, walking barefoot, doing our best to connect to the planet,” she said. “I think anyone that lives here would be shocked to see a lot of that footage is filmed literally just down the street from here.”

Human features a slew of different artists such as Jodi B’s sister Nique Blue, Zhe the Free, and aerialist Veronica Kitten. The song was also produced by her partner Makemdef.
