Want to beat the heat? Check out this little taste of Hawaii in Kelowna

This cool treat is a must on a hot day!

As another heat wave hits the Okanagan, there is no better way to beat the heat than a cool treat.

How about trying an authentic Hawaiian shave ice?

Simon Ng and his Aloha Okanagan food truck is serving up the chilly dessert around the city.

What makes shave ice authentically Hawaiian is the process of spinning a large block of ice over a sharp blade to produce light fluffy ribbons, according to Ng.

“The big difference is that lots of other people will use cubed ice to put in like a blender machine that spits out a bunch of kind of chunky icy thing, and that’s what basically a snow cone is.”

Most people know the treat as ‘shaved ice’, though the Hawaiian way of referring to it is ‘shave ice’, to reflect the action of shaving the ribbons off the block.

Ng says his dessert is big with the kids, the most popular flavours being Rainbow, and Shark Attack that comes with a shark gummy eating a gummy bear.

“It’s so cool. I mean everyone likes shave ice right? We just kind of like the beachy Hawaiian feel.”

He has an interesting background, coming from a mixed Irish and Chinese heritage, but is often asked if he is Hawaiian.

“I know I look a little bit Hawaiian. I guess it’s kind of that Polynesian, Asian kind of look. So, I’m adopted Hawaiian I guess you could say.”
