You may have more in common with your neighbours than you think.

Kelowna’s seventh annual Neighbour Day will take place on May 1, and will help give people an opportunity to connect with their community.

Community Development Coordinator, Tanya Sletten, told Kelowna10, the day is an annual celebration of community.

“We encourage Kelowna residents to meet their neighbours, perform an act of neighbourliness, or simply create opportunities for neighbours to gather and have some fun,” Sletten said.

She added there are many different ways to celebrate the day, and it doesn’t have to be a grand gesture.

“It can be as simple as inviting a neighbour over for tea and coffee, [or] it can be a picnic in the park,” Sletten said.

The community is encouraged to let the city know how they plan to celebrate. Residents can register a Neighbour Day pledge by April 25th, which enters them into a draw to win prizes to help with their plan.

“One prize draw is for the use of the meet your street kit for their Neighbour Day activity. The kit includes giant lawn games such as tic-tac-toe, connect four, giant Jenga, bocci. Just different ways for people to stay connected and engaged,” Sletten said.

The second prize draw is for a chance to win a $50 gift card to put towards their Neighbour Day activity.

The past two years of the pandemic have made it difficult for people to connect in person, which is why residents resorted to Neighbour Day virtual gatherings instead.

“The last few years have been really unique in the sense that people were really forced to find creative ways to stay socially connected while being apart,” she said.

The city is excited to see what residents of the community have in mind for this year, now that in-person gatherings are allowed.

“People get to know one another, lend a helping hand, and just really witnessing what community can do when they come together,” Sletten said.
