WATCH: Haven't flown for a while? Here's what you need to know at YLW

Jetting off somewhere? It's going to be busy

  • Things may look a little different if you haven't traveled for a while
  • Do yourself a favour: get to the airport early

The return in popularity of air travel coupled with the spring break vacation period means airports are going to be busy, Kelowna International included.

YLW is expecting to see a surge in passenger volumes as the pandemic restrictions begin to lift across the country.

Airport management said passenger numbers will be comparable to 2019, the year before COVID-19 shut things down, but there are still guidelines to follow. And those regulations may be unfamiliar to many travelers if they haven’t been to the airport since COVID restrictions came into effect two years ago.

Masks will continue to be mandatory at security screening, in the departures lounge and for arriving passengers until they have exited into the baggage claim area.

Proof of Vaccination is required for all federally regulated travel, including air travel.

Airport management said they recognize many passengers may not have traveled for some time.

“We know this spring is going to be busy at YLW. We are excited to be welcoming guests back and want to help make their travel journey as easy as possible,” said Airport Director, Sam Samaddar in a media release.

“We recognize many passengers haven’t traveled in a few years, so we’d like to ensure they understand how traveling may be different since the last time they visited YLW.”

With the increase of travelers, it is recommended to arrive at YLW at least two hours prior to departure.

Passengers are also encouraged to check with their airline to confirm what testing is required for entry into their final destination.

Key tips

Check in online, arrive early and note COVID-19 antigen and PCR testing is still available on site at YLW. Appointments are required.

Remember to keep your proof of vaccination accessible, even without access to Internet or Wi-Fi.
