This season, try replacing a typical Dracena or fountain grass centrepiece with something like a bird of paradise plant. It's big, it's beautiful and it creates instant drama.

It's also an investment piece that can be wintered indoors and used outside again next season.

Once you have your 'thriller' in place, plant your 'fillers', sticking to just a few colours arranged in blocks.

Don't forget the 'spillers' that add interest below the planter line. The idea is to keep everything else simple so attention goes to your 'money piece'!

As with any outdoor plants, Blanleil advises you to fertilize weekly and make sure to place your finished planters in the appropriate sun/shade area.
