WATCH: From shapes to sloths, these cozy quilts have it all

These blankets are both warm and wonderfully creative

  • First quilt show in five years
  • A large variety of different quilt styles
  • An opportunity for local talent to showcase work

Dozens of intricate and creative quilts hung from the walls of the Okanagan Mission Hall, as the 2022 Quilt Show took place for the first time in five years.

Everything from modern pieces, to dolls and clothing took space in the hall, allowing visitors to walk around and enjoy the work of the talented quilters the Okanagan has to offer.

President of the Orchard Valley Quilters Guild, Susan Meanley, told Kelowna10, people have been madly quilting in the background during the pandemic.

“This is their chance to show their work to the public,” Meanley said.

There were three main types of quilts on display at the event: modern quilts, which are often very geometric; art quilts; and handfuls, which are all done by hand.

For Meanley, the event allows people to showcase their talents to the community.

“[It’s] an opportunity to see work a lot of us keep on our beds or hang on the walls of our houses and nobody ever sees,” she said.

Meanley added the event can help encourage people to take up quilting.

“Especially [people] close to retirement, may find this is something they'd like to pursue in their retirement years,” Meanley said.

Comradery is a big aspect of the show, as it was a collaborative experience putting together the displays.

“We had a fabulous time yesterday putting this all together hanging things. We had husbands in here, we had young people in here, moving things around,” Meanley said.

“It was just a wonderful, wonderful collaborative effort to get this put together, and now we get to sit back and enjoy the public watching what we did.”
