WATCH: ‘Flowers make everybody happy’

The feelgood gift for Mother’s Day

  • COVID-19 was busy for this business
  • Flowers help express creativity

Giving the gift of nature’s beauty is how one local shop owner describes flowers for Mother’s Day.

“Flowers make everybody happy… They make you feel special, they are proven for mental health reasons, they’re just uplifting,” Corinne Rimstad, owner of Mission Park Flowers, told Kelowna10.

For Rimstad, expressing herself through designing beautiful arrangements makes her job fulfilling.

“I’m very creative, I love working with my hands,” she said. “I love to start with nothing and finish with something… flowers are just another outlet for me to be creative.”

She said it’s hard to tell if this year is busier than last year since lots of people leave flower shopping until the last minute.

“But COVID was really, really busy because nobody was travelling, so the last two years were exceptional,” Rimstad explained.

She said peonies are what most people have been asking for, but they aren’t in season until the end of May – which is a bit too late for Mother’s Day of course.

“Most [popular] right now is a designer’s choice, so just anything we want to make we can make,” Rimstad said. Arrangements include a variety of blooms such as roses, azaleas, carnations, and aspidistras.

“You can pick a colour palette if you want, but the freedom to create is better if we don’t have restrictions.”
