WATCH: Flood Watch ended following recent heavy rains

All eyes on Mission Creek as flows rapidly increase

UPDATE (July 5, 2022. 1 p.m.)

The B.C. River Forecast Centre has downgraded the earlier Flood Watch for Mission Creek. It is now a High Streamflow Advisory.

The agency said Tuesday, Mission Creek near East Kelowna, flows peaked on July 4th at 55 m3/s and receded, with a minor peak last night of 41.2 m3/s, with current flows at 37 m3 /s (below a 2-year flow). Current forecasts suggest continued recession within this system.

The threat of localized flooding is back as heavy rain storms have the potential to drop more than 15 mm in a one-hour period.

The BC River Forecast Centre has upgraded the latest conditions to a flood watch for Mission Creek.

The agency said unsettled weather had produced five mm to 35 mm of rain throughout the region since yesterday.

On Monday, an upper low is expected to track across south-west B.C, bringing wrap around precipitation with the potential for heavier rainfall and thundershowers to areas in the Southern Interior and Kootenays.

On Mission Creek near East Kelowna, flows have increased rapidly overnight, measuring 56 m3/s (approximately a two-year flow) earlier Monday.

Additional rises up to 80 or 100 m3/s are possible today into Tuesday, depending on rainfall amounts.

Last week, Central Okanagan Emergency Operations rescinded a local state of emergency that was in place since earlier in the month.

Until water levels recede, residents are asked to leave debris that’s washed up along the waterfront in place to protect against erosion.
