Several reports of mischief or key theft from the box
A police investigation is underway after someone tampered and stole from several fire lockboxes around Kelowna.
Kelowna RCMP have received several reports since February that fire lockboxes have been damaged and some had the keys and fobs stolen from them.
The keys inside allow the fire department to enter the building in case of an emergency.
The Kelowna Fire Department (KFD) said in a media release it’s received 16 separate reports where the lockboxes were tampered with; nine were damaged, while seven had the keys stolen.
This has happened to buildings in the Rutland, Springfield, and Quail Ridge areas.
Fire Prevention Officer Paul Johnson said the lockboxes are not owned by the fire department and that the KFD has informed building property owners with a letter about the situation.
“The letter includes information about how to update the locks on their existing lockbox, where to purchase a new lockbox and tips on how to enhance security to reduce unauthorized entry,” he said.
One incident on Mar. 8, saw a man approach a residential building on Houghton Road between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. He was well dressed and greeted people as they walked by.
Kelowna RCMP Cpl. Tammy Lobb said officers continue to work with the fire department. She said property managers should thoroughly check any boxes for tampering.
“If access has been gained, report it to the fire department as well as police. If you see anyone accessing the fire lockboxes, ask them for identification,” she said. “Both fire department personnel and locksmiths will carry identification. Non authorized persons should be reported to the RCMP immediately.”
Anyone with information is asked to come forward.
