Downtown UBCO campus gets taller in updated plans

Revised plans for the new downtown university campus have it soaring 46-storeys into the sky.

That is a significant update from the already ambitious 34-floor proposal for the vertical University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) tower that was revealed in late December.

The revised schematics were submitted to city hall earlier in June.

A special comprehensive development zone is being crafted to accommodate the development. The unique zoning will “allow the full range of academic, research, and other supporting land uses essential to a leading-edge university program and campus,” according to planning documents.

Dubbed CD-28, the special zoning will permit everything from apartment housing to childcare, cultural, recreational, and professional services, as well as religious assembles and retail. A building up to 46 floors and 160 metres would be allowed. The revised development sits at 46-floors and 155 metres.

The project at 550 Doyle Ave. was originally slated to climb 125 metres into the sky, and include a medical clinic, café, and 24 floors of student housing.

The new plans detail 33 floors of residential accommodation, from floors 12 to 45. Dozens of classrooms, labs, and a circular lecture hall round out the lower academic floors. The ground floor has the potential to house a creative maker space, gallery, and outdoor covered courtyard. Elevated terraces are also proposed for the third and eleventh floors.

The School of Nursing continues to have a major presence in the new campus, along with the Schools of Social Work and Health and Exercise Science.

The tower is just one of three proposed for the former site of the Daily Courier. It will be developed alongside co-owner, Mission Group. Construction on the new campus is expected to begin in mid-2022.

The new design will need to circulate city hall before coming back to council for approval.
