Search and rescue team springs into action to save radio host

The extraordinary volunteers with Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) are called out to help someone in need, on average, every four days.

Only last week, teams located and extracted three hikers and their dogs from the High Rim trail between Oyama Lake and Beaver Lake Road in Lake Country.

Last year, they responded to 84 calls for their third busiest in their 68-year history. They were called out 107 times in 2021.

Tasks included everything from urban searches for lost seniors, winter rescues in extreme cold, rescues of injured mountain bikers, motorcycle and UTV riders, to multi-day searches on Okanagan Lake for missing swimmers.

The volunteers are always updating their skills.

Big Ginger, from 103.1 Beach Radio, took part in a training exercise that lasted into the night. He was the 'injured' subject of the mission.
