Concert brings popular French novel to life
Prepare to celebrate as the Okanagan Villa Courtyard Concerts make a triumphant return at The Vibrant Vine Winery.
After a challenging three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, they are back with an extraordinary production titled 'Here the People Sing'. This captivating show is set in 19th century France and inspired by Victor Hugo's novel, featuring a blend of narration and popular songs. It features a talented six-member ensemble.
“All of us couldn't wait. The staff included. It's such a special thing to be a part of,” pianist Carol Colpitts told Kelowna10. “We have so many loyal customers and they’ve been anxious to see the return of these concerts. And we're really excited to be able to do it once again.”
Colpitts added that it’s gratifying to know she has a talented group of performers who are ready for anything that might pop up during the performance, whether it's planned or not.
“If [the performers] happen to jump lyric, or they happen to sing when they're not supposed to be, you just have to catch them as if that was the way it was planned,” she explained. “You have to be on your toes. But these guys are seasoned pros, and we have a lot of familiarity and that transcends the stage.”
Melina Schein, is the soprano soloist in the show, and will perform many roles.
“They're all different ranges and of course different characterization and different storylines. As an actor, more of the challenge in this show lies within that singing,” she explained. “I have been singing this music since I was a little girl. It's some of my favorite music of all time. It's really a privilege.”
Schein describes the essence of the story as a triumphant celebration of the human spirit, interwoven with elements of sacrifice, love, redemption, and passion.
The show premieres July 20- 22nd.
Tickets can be purchased online.
