Survey shows things worsening over last three years
If you think traffic congestion is getting worse around Kelowna, a survey commissioned by the city appears to back that up.
The 2022 Transportation Survey shows two-thirds (67 per cent) of residents agree they spend more time in traffic now than they did three years ago.
Also, the vast majority of people surveyed (94 per cent) use their own private vehicles – car, truck or motorcycle – to get around.
The researchers conducted 300 interviews across the city, mainly by cell phone, among residents aged over 18.
Residents reported a drop in the volume of trips, with 61 per cent agreeing they made fewer drives around town than they did three years ago. People chose to work from home and got more things delivered.
Only 27 per cent of people surveyed said they walk, bike, or take transit more than they did three years ago.
The survey found the biggest transportation issues were: helping people of all ages and abilities get around, the impact of congestion on the economy, and the time it takes to get places.
So what’s causing the problems?
Most of those surveyed figure the vehicles just passing through Kelowna (not travelling within the city) are to blame for the congestion and there aren’t enough convenient options other than driving.
Many also figure there are too many people driving alone in rush hour.
The survey found attitudes toward long-term solutions for traffic congestion have strengthened, with nearly two-thirds (65 per cent) agreeing that reducing dependence on cars is the answer.
Residents are also warming up to the idea of paying for traffic congestion solutions, with 54 per cent agreeing they would be willing to pay more taxes to improve transportation in Kelowna.
