Time to ski

Snow lovers can hit the slopes at Big White.

  • Opening pushed back a day due to lack of snow
  • 12 runs and 3 lifts open

Big White Ski Resort is back for another great season.

Opening day was pushed back by 24 hours due to the warmer weather and a lack of snow, but managers said the conditions should improve soon and the first day was still a success.

“We had to pivot slightly to make sure we had the conditions ready to go in the area of the mountain that had the most amount of snow,” Trevor Hanna, VP of Hospitality told Kelowna10.

“We’re expecting some more snow in the next little while so we should be in great shape heading into next weekend.”

Clear skies and a snow base of 77 cm meant skiers and snowboarders could enjoy the slopes for the first time after the long off-season.

“It’s so nice to see people back on snow. It’s been half a year since we closed the resort,” Hanna said.

“From what we can tell, everybody has come out and had a wonderful experience.”

Skiers of all ages were on the slopes and some dogs were out enjoying the snow, too.

One skier told Kelowna10 about why he’s been coming to Big White since the 1970s.

“It’s always been a great place to come and enjoy with the family, even just by yourself,” Shayne Varey said.

“I’ll come up on days off myself and meet some friends, get some slopes, have a couple nice cold beers, and sit around a fire.”

He said it’s nice to be back on the hill, but he’d like more snow.

“I don’t know if we’re going to have that champagne powder right off the bat, but it’s nice to see a lot of people out there and everybody getting out,” Varey said.
