Curated libations expand Okanagan's palate
One could be remiss for mistaking they’ve stepped off a plane and into the tropical embrace of Tulum upon entering Kelowna’s newest cocktail bar.
From a bounty of foliage to ocean inspired marble, rope swings and rattan lampshades, the Ricco Room aims to present a bespoke dining experience in a tropical oasis.
“We just wanted to bring something new and different to the city,” general manager Taylorr Gramlich told Kelowna10. “We wanted to make fun, presentable cocktails with some theatrical elements, and really capitalize on the Instagram component – all while focusing on high quality products and presentation.”
Outside, the patio engulfs diners in a terrarium-like experience.
Everything at the cocktail bar on Pandosy Street – from the cocktails to the wine and food - is curated in-house.
The list of libations on offer is long and unique in the hopes of expanding people’s palettes, and what to expect from a dining experience in the Okanagan.
There are at least 26 cocktails on the menu at any given time – half developed in house, and half more classic – and of course, off menu options, too. Many of the spirits used are uncommon in the Okanagan and are mixed using innovative techniques.
Gramlich said each drink has a little story or Easter egg behind it, adding to the intrigue.
Working to accommodate a broad base, every cocktail can be made vegan and non-alcoholic.
“We want to make sure that our mocktails are dynamic,” Gramlich said. “We’ve been experimenting with some zero-proof gin because we want the flavour and depth so that everyone who comes in can enjoy a bespoke experience.”
Often, that experience can be pretentious – something Gramlich is eager to avoid.
“I want a high level of service and a high quality of product, but I want us to be educators to everyone that comes through our door,” he added.
The Ricco Room’s dishes span a wide range, too, accommodating a spectrum of dietary restrictions.
“There are a lot of restaurants that have been opening recently and are elevating the scene in Kelowna, and we want to be part of that scene, and provide more options and more diversity for the city.”
