Aurora borealis inspires local glass worker
Kelowna has been witness to gorgeous light shows courtesy of the aurora borealis.
Unfortunately, as amazing as these occurrences are, they must always come to an end.
Enter Mike Moore of Hidden Village Creations, a local glass worker who is immortalizing the lights in his medium.
“Recently I've been really inspired by our night skies that we've been getting,” Moore told Kelowna10. “We've been getting some really crazy aurora borealis from the flares that the sun's been sending out.”
Inspired by the beautiful natural event, Moore decided he wanted to make what he saw into something physical.
By utilizing gold and silver flakes he pans from local areas and blending it into the glass, he is able to create an effect that mimics the look of the night sky.
He has already created many small marbles, each with their own unique pattern of the stars contained inside.
“No two pieces are going to be the same from the way I make my glass,” he said. “What I do is very organic, what turns out is what I get. And with the practice that I've had, it usually works out pretty well.”
Moore said that inspiration for him can come from anywhere.
As someone who is on the autism spectrum and has ADHD, he said his brain is open to absolutely everything and anything.
“If you ask a lot of craftspeople or artists where they get their ideas, they'll tell you that it's already inside the medium,” Moore explained. “You know, the thing that wants to be created is already there. I'm just helping it come out.”
