This guy won over $4,000 in one tough radio contest

Local 'geek' guesses all three songs correctly

It was the one-second acoustic challenge that had Kelowna guessing.

But for one lucky 103.1 Beach Radio listener, persistence paid off and now he has the extra cash - $4,600 to be precise - to pay for a dream holiday to New Zealand.

Roger Kelly, like countless others who listen to one of Kelowna’s favourite radio stations, was captivated (and frustrated), by the latest edition of the very popular Free Money Montage contest.

Three tiny fragments of some of the biggest hits in pop music were played during Morning's with Ara and Toby and Afternoons with Big Ginger. After more than two weeks, and with no one guessing all three songs correctly, the jackpot just kept getting bigger.

Earlier this week, during the afternoon show, Roger struck it lucky and said he’s been walking around with a grin on his face ever since.

“Since the contest started, I followed along,” the Rutland resident told Ara and Toby. “I’m not that great with the music but there were a few times I thought ‘oh, I for sure have it.’ I tried phoning, and I never got in.”

But he didn’t quit. This week he called in to the station and got through. He had the correct, full answer: Queen’s Somebody to Love, Midnight Oil by Beds Are Burning, and Freedom! ’90 by George Michael.

Roger calls himself ‘a little bit geeky’; he designs satellite communications gadgets and has lived in Kelowna for the last ten years.

So, what will Roger spend his big prize on?

“I’ve been thinking about going to New Zealand for a while, so I think that cements that decision,” he said, noting the holiday season brings plenty of opportunities to spend money.

And, as a regular listener, he knows one of the organizations Beach Radio supports is JoeAnna’s House. Roger was kind enough to make a donation before he left the studio with his big cheque.
