‘Block the sun, not the fun’
As the scorching Okanagan sun blazes overhead during the summer, it serves as a reminder to protect your skin.
Karen Wells, unfortunately, knows that all too well.
She lost her son, Morgan, at the age of 33 to undiagnosed melanoma and has since been on a mission to increase awareness about safety in the sun and how to protect yourself from skin cancer.
With that, she began Morgan’s MOLE Patrol, a non-profit organization back in 2019 in memory of Morgan.
She spoke with Big Ginger from 103.1 Beach Radio, and said the idea was not only a result of her loss, but something she’s wanted to do for some time.
“Morgan and I actually talked about doing a mole patrol awareness thing to let people know, because of the difference between his mole and mine. And when he passed, I tried to channel my grief into something positive” she said. “If I could stop one family from going through what we went through, my life's work is done.”
Currently, there are three dispensers conveniently located throughout town: Summerhill Pyramid Winery, Kelowna Visitor Centre, and Kelowna Golf & Country Club.
Furthermore, there are imminent plans to install one at YLW, with the eventual aim of establishing another dispenser at the university campus.
For more information about being a sponsor or to have one at your location, contact Karen at morgansmolepatrol@gmail.com.
