These puppies are looking for a fresh start

Meet and greet lets rescue dogs meet potential families

Paws it Forward has received several dogs that were part of a group rescued from Manitoba last month.

Sixty-one dogs and eight cats were saved by K9 Advocates Manitoba and several were brought to Kelowna to find new homes.

Paws it Forward held an adoption meet and greet this weekend at Pawcademy in West Kelowna to let people meet some of the dogs.

Although no puppies will be going to their new homes yet, this event allowed board members to meet some of the applicants. Over the next couple of weeks, puppies will meet their potential parents in one-on-one sessions.

‘They’re going to be pretty big. We’re probably thinking around 80, 90, 100 pounds sort of thing,” board member Sam Howie told Kelowna10.

“A lot of them are mixed breeds. We try to do what we can to guess their breed, but unless we do an actual DNA test on them, we won’t 100 per cent know.”

At Pawcademy on Sunday, a lineup snaked around the building as people waited to get a chance to play and meet the puppies.

One puppy, named Costa, was shot before being rescued. The remains of the bullet are still wedged between his lungs and heart but the dog has fully healed.

Howie said dogs give unconditional love, and it’s great helping rescues find new homes.

“These guys have had a really crappy start, so it’s kind of nice to be able to at least give them a better upbringing than what they had,” she explained.

“I think that’s probably the biggest takeaway from rescuing a dog, is teaching them that we aren’t as bad as they think that we are.”
