The Lazys: Aussie's loss, Canada's gain

The rock band Canada adopted with open arms...and ears

Aussie rock outfit The Lazys have come a long way since bursting onto the scene with their landmark appearance at Canadian Music Week in Toronto in 2014.

Matty Morris, the lead guitarist and vocalist told Ryan, morning show co-host on 104.7 The LIZARD, it was something of a gamble to leave their home country to seek fame and fortune but it sure paid off as the track Shake It Like You Mean It announced to all rock fans that they had arrived.

Although formally from Sydney, Australia, The Lazys are formally acknowledged as a CanCon band, which means they get ample airtime on radio stations like 104.7 The LIZARD.

How does the band get that valuable Canadian marketing status? Canadian Ian D'Sa of Billy Talent fame, co-writes the songs with Morris and front man Leon Harrison, and also produces the material.

Their latest song, Ripper of a Night has just been released.

The Lazys have played live gigs here in the Okanagan in the past and Morris says there'll be more to come in the future, "...with bells on", as he put it. No tour dates have been announced yet.

He said Canada's love of rock is one of the reasons he's now a permanent resident here, based in Toronto.

"They [Canadian authorities] gave me a PR card! Unfortunately, the music industry in Australia is not very supportive of rock, " Morris said. "[So], we all have to leave and come here!"

Ryan was sent a few questions from listeners who knew he'd be catching up with Morris via Zoom, and one of those was from a fan who said his wife was enamoured with Morris' stage presence.
