The first Drop Zone event has come to Kelowna

Death defying stunts were done for a good cause.

  • Participants rappelled down Landmark 6 building
  • Easter seals organized it.
  • Money raised for children with disabilities.

Instead of taking the elevator, brave volunteers rappelled 18 stories down the Landmark 6 building for Kelowna’s first Drop Zone event.

Easter Seals, the organizer, is a charity that helps children with disabilities and their families. They’ve held similar events in other cities since 2005.

Chelsea Stringer, who dressed as Spiderwoman, said she was more excited than nervous to go down the side of a skyscraper.

“I think it’s a wonderful way to raise money and it’s always so much fun to get to do something that’s this, I don’t know, it feels risky, but it is so safe that it’s not actually worrisome,” she told Kelowna10.

Stringer was joined by some of her coworkers, also dressed as Spiderman.

In order to participate, fundraisers were asked to collect $850 for Easter Seals’ camps.

Easter Seals has three camps across B.C. for people with disabilities.

“It gives them that quintessential summer camp experience. Where they can grow, become independent, just be themselves, and have a great time," Easter Seals Community Engagement Manager Michelle Webber said.

She said the success of this event was more than just a professional motivation for her.

“My sister was a camper with Easter Seals at camp Squamish down in the Lower Mainland. There’s a personal tie there for me. To be able to help families afford to send their children to a camp like this is huge.”

Easter Seals is already planning more drops in 2022 in cities across Canada.

Anyone interested in participating in a future Drop Zone can join their mailing list to find out about future events.
