Storm damages sports venue

Flying furniture blamed for roof damage.

  • Canvas roof ripped open from heavy winds
  • Gusts reached up to 80 km/h
  • Leftover furniture still hanging around

A popular Kelowna sports hub is in need of a roof repair.

Central Sports Club on Ellis St. saw sections of its canvas roof ripped away during Monday’s swift but severe thunderstorm.

Wind gusts reached up to 80 km/h late in the afternoon.

A staff member at Central Kitchen + Bar, which is connected to the facility, told Kelowna10 he believes the damage was caused by flying furnishings from a neighboring property.

The area around the complex, and surrounding block, was littered with patio and outdoor furnishings Tuesday morning.

Clean-up was underway on the sidewalks around the One Water tower and neighboring businesses.

All sports at the complex are on hold until further notice.
