More seniors are living on the streets. Here's their story

It's a distressing reality that is becoming more common amongst seniors in society - living on the streets.

For Sally, at the age of 70, it became true for her, too.

Just two years ago, with the rising cost of living and a fixed income, she was forced from her home and into paying day rates to live in a motel.

But further financial constraints forced her to abandon this meager comfort and take residence in her car.

The grim realities of life on the streets were harsh and unforgiving. The biting cold, the cramped confines of her vehicle, and the constant need for vigilance all conspired against her health, leading to blood clots in her lungs and a subsequent hospital stay.

Emerging from the hospital, Sally was confronted with a bleak future and no place to call home.

She was forced to find refuge in an emergency shelter.

For someone who had spent her entire life working, she found herself unable to afford even the most basic necessity - a roof over her head.

However, Sally's story took an uplifting turn.

Her path crossed with the Kelowna Gospel Mission, which led her to Selah House.

Today, Sally has more than just a shelter: she has a safe, affordable home surrounded by a nurturing community.

Sadly, Sally is not alone. Her story is a stark reminder of the urgent need for more such initiatives that provide not just shelter, but dignity and respect to our elderly population.
