Showcasing over 100 unique whiskies
A large part of Kelowna’s identity is engrained in the production and consumption of wine.
However, there’s another drink that has been growing in popularity, and the Whisky Global event came to town to showcase the spirit.
“There is so much that goes into whisky, and therefore whisky has so many different variations that a show like this really can educate people on,” event coordinator Adam Bloch told Kelowna10 Saturday at Laurel Packinghouse. “Everything kind of changes the flavour, changes the smell, changes the look, and therefore, it becomes this very special product.”
The event has been running for the past ten years in Vancouver, but after a wave of requests from whisky enthusiasts as well as distributors, it was finally brought to Kelowna.
Over 100 whiskies were available to be sampled, from distilleries around the world.
“A lot of countries are now making whisky. We have whisky here from India, and I think even Sweden,” Bloch said. “So, everyone's kind of coming up and stepping up their game now.”
The venue was filled with enthusiasts, moving from table to table, sampling from the vast varieties on offer.
Among the many whiskies showcased were Canadian-made ones. Bloch said there was a time when there were only a few brands on offer but that’s all changed. In the past ten years, he has noticed a large jump in quality from Canadian distillers.
“There's a few local distilleries here from B.C., and their whisky is amazing,” he said. “I think in the next ten years it's going to be a game changer in Canada with how many amazing whiskies are coming from all of the local distilleries.”
