See how high creek levels have risen as Flood Watch declared

Big rise in levels in the last week

Ongoing warm weather and the likelihood of rain later in the week means there is now the potential for significant flooding through the Southern Interior.

The BC River Forecast Centre has upgraded conditions on rivers, creeks and streams to a Flood Watch, which means levels are rising and may exceed the bank.

Mission Creek has risen quickly in recent days and on Tuesday the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) said that forced the closure of the Casorso Road bridge underpass along the Mission Creek Greenway.

It said it was closely monitoring other underpasses along the Greenway.

It’s not yet clear exactly where the heaviest rain my fall starting Thursday but the River Forecast Centre said current flows in the Okanagan region remain at or below the 2-year flow in most areas.

With on-going above normal temperatures next week, rises in rivers are expected across the region, with increasing potential for flood hazard in other rivers over the coming days.

Snowmelt has increased over the past few days, particularly in mid-elevation areas, with 25 mm to 50 mm of snow melting on Monday.

The potential for heavier precipitation on Friday and Saturday could lead to a period of significant flood hazard through the region late this week.

The public is advised that being near riverbanks, creeks and fast flowing bodies of water is dangerous. People should avoid recreational activities such as fishing, swimming, boating or hiking near high streamflow rivers or streams.
