One of the stories on Kelowna10 that had people talking. Massive police response near university
A massive police presence at the residential area of UBCO Monday night was in response to reports of shots fired. It's the second such incident in the city in the last four days.
It appears there was no victim, but police are asking for the public’s help because witnesses report people running away and leaving in a vehicle afterwards.
As many as ten police vehicles flooded onto Academy Way around 9:40 p.m.
In a media release, Kelowna RCMP said multiple frontline officers responded to the area. From speaking with witnesses, officers learned people were seen running away after the shots were fired and they departed in a vehicle.
Officers with the Kelowna RCMP Police Dog Services as well as the Forensic Identification Section also attended.
“This is the second shooting incident in our community in the past four days, and this incident occurred close to the UBCO campus,” said Cpl. Tammy Lobb. “Our investigators are working to identify those responsible and determine whether or not there is a correlation between these two incidents”.
On Friday at around 8 p.m., police responded to multiple reports of gunshots in the 900 block of Fuller Avenue. Witnesses said two small vehicles were seen speeding away from the area.
A short time later, a report was received about a vehicle on fire in the 2300 block of Belgo Road.
City of Kelowna fire crews responded and put out the blaze that destroyed the vehicle.
Investigators say that vehicle was involved in the shooting and had been reported stolen from Kelowna earlier that evening.
