Rolling around the moon 13 times

Data from one company gives insight about e-scooter use during the summer

  • People have travelled thousands of kilometers
  • Compliance rates have increased

People in Kelowna have travelled nearly 125,000 km on two wheels – or the equivalent of circling the moon 13 times – and that’s just data from one scooter company.

Roll, one of two companies offering e-scooters in the city, has released its year end report, which includes a bounty of user data.

Since launch, Roll has accumulated 17,000 unique users in the city who travel an average of 2.55 km per ride for about 18.5 minutes.

Since the pilot program started in April, the city has introduced additional rules to keep people safe.

Some of these restrictions include limiting service downtown from 10:30 p.m. until 4 a.m., and capping the number of scooters downtown to no more than 30 per cent of a provider’s fleet.

During the summer, the city placed stickers around town reminding people sidewalks are for pedestrians - not scooters.

Roll said it saw a 90 per cent compliance rate from riders after rolling out smart sidewalk detection technology earlier in 2021.

It also reported 30.16 metric tonnes of carbon emissions were saved. Stats also show the mode of transportation has become far safer than in the initial months of operation.

More information can be found on Roll's website.
