Local brewery hosts annual competition
Dozens of skiers and snowboarders were strapping in for the first time this season at Red Bird Brewing for their second annual Rail Jam competition.
Large trailer-loads of snow were shipped into the parking lot Wednesday at the north end Kelowna brewery, turning the unseasonably fall day into a winter-sport wonderland.
“It's pretty convenient to say the least, but there's a lot of work that goes into this,” snowboarder Vito Amico told Kelowna10. “[The snow] is not necessarily brought, we bring it. A group of us team up and there's quite a bit of work that comes into putting this event on.”
With the warmer months finally past them, many who were participating were already looking forward to getting back on the slopes.
As snow was being packed into place, and practice runs commenced, skier Alexander Henderson shared his thoughts on the event’s atmosphere.
“Everybody here is super excited and seeing everybody ride, it's just getting me even more pumped,” Henderson said. “It's definitely more of a friendly competition. I think everybody's just down to ride, make some new homies, possibly get a new ski buddy, and hit the mountain soon.”
Hendersons big goal for the day was to put up some decent scores, as he will be going to compete on a professional level in the future. For Amico however, his priority was simply to have a good time.
“The main thing is to have fun,” he said. “Second and third are not getting hurt and making sure everyone else has a good time too.”
