Here's why vegan food is reaching new audiences in Kelowna

Kelowna is embracing the vegan scene

Kelowna’s Laurel Packing House was home to the “Veg Out” Okanagan Plant Based Market.

Over 40 vendors from around the Okanagan showcased a diverse range of products Sunday, offering vegan and plant-based products, and artisanal crafts.

One of the highlights is the emphasis on knowing how the food is made, and where it comes from.

“It’s not boring anymore the food you can get for vegans. Everything comes from mother nature,” organizer Frances Callaghan told Kelowna10.

“There is such a niche for it now, people aren’t sure where to reach out. So, when putting these types of events on, they’re going to get to know the people making the products, know about them, and where else to find them.”

The market has become a hub for attracting not only vegans and vegetarians but also curious foodies and health-conscious individuals. It’s become a gathering where like-minded people can come together, embrace that lifestyle, sustainability, and delicious food.

Callaghan said there has been continued demand for having events like these and believes many people in the Okanagan are starting to convert into at least giving it a try.

"It’s a new lifestyle out there for people, and there hasn’t been a lot of events like these. Now, were reaching more people by putting these on," she said. “I think the number of vegans in Kelowna is growing. It’s getting closer to 50 per cent. I know some people who aren’t vegan but they’re trying it and finding they can live with both lifestyles and enjoy it.”
