A star bull rider shows us the ropes - and other stuff
Looking for a full body workout?
How about bull riding?
Word of warning though: you get injured … plenty, even if you’re a top pro with all the right protective gear.
(Check out our video to learn about the essential equipment.)
Take defending PBR pro Brock Radford for example.
“Every inch, you find out you’re working muscles you never knew you had,” Radford told Kelowna10 at Prospera Place ahead of the latest stop on the Elite Cup Series, Thursday, July 18.
“I’ve broken my ankle, my leg, I’ve had a left knee reconstruction, I broke the left side of my ribs, left collarbone, left arm, left wrist … I could keep going.”
That’s the way it is for pro bull riders, Radford explained; staying 100 per cent fit is hardly ever a reality.
But he wouldn’t miss out on the sensation of having the perfect eight-second ride for the world, especially in front of a packed arena. When the gate flies open and the bull starts to kick wildly, he said it’s possible sometimes to have a sense of serenity.
“When it don’t work it feels like a car crash. But, when it clicks - flow state - and you ride one good, you can almost think about making a sandwich at home,” the 29-year-old Albertan said.
PBR Canada’s Cup Series regularly features Canada’s best riders alongside some of the organization’s top international athletes, squaring off against the rankest bucking bulls from across the nation.
Fans will see Radford, and fellow riders, attempt to stay on the 2,000-pound bulls for eight seconds. The bulls are “the super star athletes more than we are,” Radford noted.
“I love Kelowna, it’s been good to me,” Radford said. "The fans are great, the weather’s great, we get to enjoy the lake. It’s pretty hard to beat Kelowna.”
