Pandosy pier project receives provincial dollars

Phase 1 expected to be complete this year

Eight years after the public weighed in on its design, the first phase of a new waterfront park is expected to take shape this year.

And the city has received nearly $400,000 from the province to help fund the new public pier and park space in Kelowna.

The money is part of more than 50 tourism projects throughout B.C. receiving provincial dollars.

“We know tourism infrastructure is a priority for communities,” Tourism Minister Melanie Mark said in a media release. “Our investment in tourism creates good-paying jobs that directly support local economies now and will elevate our reputation as a world-class destination for the many visitors looking to return to B.C. for years to come.”

The $391,000 is earmarked to “develop an inclusive, universally accessible, and non-motorized public pier in Kelowna.”

The Pandosy Waterfront Park is being developed in South Pandosy, just off Walnut Street.

It is slated to include an urban beach area, paddle sport launch, promenade, public art, and park space. A bike maintenance station and misting feature are also on the books.

The design was endorsed by lawmakers in 2014 following extensive public engagement. The total cost for the project is estimated at $4.5 million.

The first phase is anticipated to open in 2022. This includes most amenities, except for the pier itself.
