Off-duty cop joins chase of suspect

Cop's wife takes video

Kelowna RCMP has released video it said proves there are no days off for officers as they protect their communities.

The video, taken some time last week, shows the off-duty officer leaving his family in a vehicle as he runs up a hill to support an on-duty colleague in Lake Country. The uniformed officer was in a difficult situation with a suspect who was not cooperating, the RCMP said.

The officer’s wife, who filmed the video, can be heard speaking to herself on the video saying: “…please don’t get hurt.”

The detachment said the officer was enjoying his day off with his family when he jumped into action.

According to a media release, the officer saw what was happening, parked his vehicle, secured his family, and ran up a hill to assist in the take down of this agitated suspect.

“Fortunately, Constable Nickel was in the area and able to assist, going above and beyond to help a fellow officer,” Sergeant Desmond Kiehlbauch said. "The video was provided by a fellow officer after they heard about his action."

Police offered no further details about the incident or arrest.
