New brewery proposed for along rail trail

A largely untouched commercial property along the Okanagan Rail Trail could soon be home to a new taproom and patio.

A letter accompanying a liquor permit application to the City of Kelowna outlines plans by Railside Brewing to overhaul a square, grey building to create a modern taproom.

“Railside Brewing is a family and pet friendly brewery with a multitude of bike racks to encourage users of the Rail Trail to stop in without a vehicle,” the letter reads. “Our brewery will be a positive addition to the neighbourhood by providing a warm and inviting atmosphere where customers can enjoy local craft beer, wine and ciders.”

According to the letter, wort – part of the beer making process -- will be produced by Vice & Virtue Brewing and transferred to Railside Brewing’s fermenters. The brewery will offer small batch specialty bears, alongside a core line-up and seasonal specials.

The operators also want to partner with local wine and cider companies to offer alternative drinks.

Light snacks will initially be offered, with plans for a small kitchen to be installed to provide sandwiches and small sides.

To mitigate noise to nearby homes, a sound barrier fence will be built along the south side of the patio.

The letter said the current landlord hosted two fundraisers for the Rail Trail. Railside Brewing plans to continue the philanthropy.

If it moves forward, the business will add to the growing brewery district. At least eight craft breweries have opened in the area since 2016.

The brewery, according to the letter, hopes to open sometime in spring 2022.
