A new breed takes top spot after 31 years
The American Kennel Club released its 2022 registration statistics and found that after being the most popular dog breed for over three decades, the Labrador Retriever was outranked by the French Bulldog.
According to a press release, the French Bulldog has spiked in popularity over the last 10 years.
In 2012, the breed was the 14th most popular and jumped to No. 2 in the 2021 rankings.
Registrations have also increased by over 1,000 per cent from 2012 to 2022.
Lisa Adlem, of Precious Paws Frenchies in Kelowna, spoke with Toby Tannas from 103.1 Beach Radio, and told her she wasn’t surprised by the news.
“There are so many great things about a Frenchie. They’re super loveable, comical, smart, and just great,” she said.
While the breed makes a great pet, Adlem said people should do their homework before considering taking one in.
“Frenchies do tend to have a lot of health issues being a dwarfed breed. I just hope people don’t cash in on an opportunity and leave the families and the dogs suffering,” she explained.
Rounding out the Top 10:

3) Golden Retriever
4) German Shepherd Dog
5) Poodle
6) Bulldog
7) Rottweiler
8) Beagle
9) Dachshund
