Monster Trucks tuned up and ready for Kelowna shows

Return of the mega machines

It’s a weekend of cars getting crushed and truck mayhem: no, we’re not talking about the intersection of Harvey and Dilworth.

It’s the return of The Motorsports Spectacular at Prospera Place, the first such event since early 2020.

What organizers have labelled an edge of your seat, thrill-a-minute event, with death-defying stunts, will unfold on the dirt that has been specially prepared in the area the last two days.

“We drive these trucks to the graveyard every weekend and they just keep coming back,” driver of the super truck christened Identity Theft, Marvin Anderson told Kelowna10 Friday as a team of mechanics were making sure all the mega vehicles were ready for their performances.

“And you know what, every kid just loves noise, and the size of them is just crazy,” he explained when highlighting the broad appeal of the spectacular show.

As an example of the mega motoring monsters on offer, Identify Theft weighs an extraordinary 12,600 lbs with 66 inch tires.

“This truck is big and fast … it’s just an awesome job to have,” Anderson said, noting the challenges of a tight arena like Prospera Place.

“You’ve got rear steering, you’re shifting, you’ve got front steering … you’re busy. You’re on the gas pretty hard, and you’re on the brakes even harder.”

The Monster Truck Challenge features bone crunching truck racing, wheelie contest and freestyle.

There’s also two-wheeled fun with the Radical Jump Showcase with Freestyle Motocross jumping off high-performance jumps.

There are three shows this weekend: Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
