Meet the artist behind the murals in Prospera Place

As you walk the concourse of Prospera Place, you’ve probably seen the paintings of former players who have proudly donned the iconic Ogopogo emblem.

Among the names to adorn the walls are Duncan Keith, Tyson Barrie, and Leon Draisaitl, to mention just a few.

And now Colton Dach’s image has been added to this illustrious visual display, following his World Junior Gold earlier this season.

For close to two decades, the artistic mastermind behind these eye-catching murals has been Edmonton based artist Joey Burdziuk.

She told RocketFAN.ca’s Regan Bartel about her process.

“It’s very much like a puzzle, because I need pictures of the medal, of trophies, the uniform, a pose, and a face,” she explained. “We just need to make sure that everything's going to work together.”

Each mural begins with a pencil sketch which takes around three hours, followed by the painting. That can take a few days to complete.

Her latest commission this week to what is formally known as the Kelowna Rockets Wall of Recognition for Outstanding Achievement, also included a redo of her earlier Nolan Foote mural originally done in August 2020. Also, she painted Stanley Cups next to Cal Foote and Luke Schenn, and additional individual trophies won by Draisaitl.

Throughout her three-decade-long career painting murals, Brudziuk has continually surprised even herself.

“I've definitely seen the growth of my own progress,” she said. “But there's a couple of phases, and especially along this wall that I'm a little impressed with myself.”
