Meet the artist at the forefront of the reggae scene in Kelowna

Crew working to fill a void in the Kelowna music scene

The Kelowna Film Studio was alive with upbeat music as preparations were made for the release of Gold Mynd’s debut album, ‘Love & Life’.

“It’s been our brainchild for 13 years,” Gold Mynd told Kelowna10. “I’m very proud of the production. It's 11 tracks and it’s a journey.”

Though he has released singles in the past, this was his first major release, and one he wanted to make sure represented his full vision and quality.

The topics of each track range from love to injustices in society, a topic reggae is very close to.

“The whole idea of reggae music is to give a voice to the voiceless, you know, to highlight certain injustice, certain issues in society,” he explained. “It's supposed to be a music about righteousness and of upliftment, you know, and it is clearly needed in a time like this today.”

He said there is a clear lack of a reggae scene in Kelowna, but it’s a void that he and fellow local artists are looking to fill.

And part of this is working to get involved in festivals and other exhibitions to showcase reggae music.

“It’s a nice city, but there’s not much things here as it relates to nightlife. As a result, reggae, obviously, is going to be absent,” Gold Mynd said. “But we look at that as a wide-open door of opportunity. So, we are embracing it, and we want to be the ones to bring reggae to the region.”

Gold Mynd’s debut album, ‘Love & Life’ can be listened to on all major music streaming platforms.
